My friend, Randy Hayes (founder of Rainforest Action Network), met Carlos Casteneda at a cocktail party.  At the Getty's, I think, in San Francisco.  It was the late 1980's.

Randy thinks for a while about what to ask this man, who had written so many
profound books, inspiring so many people.
Randy approaches Carlos.

Carlos: "You have a question."

Randy: “Well.  I was wondering. In your opinion, does what we are doing matter?”

[Randy, you must remember, was a guy who spent a great deal of time and energy fighting to prevent very large and powerful corporations and governments from destroying what remains of the world's vanishing tropical rainforests.]

Carlos looks off into the distance, as if waiting for the answer from some deep, inner voice.

Then he turns, and looks at Randy and says:

"Yes, but not for the reasons you think."
