I was about to cross 2nd Avenue, in Portland, on my way from the office to some important meeting.

It was a one-way street, traffic going from my right to my left.

I looked right - no cars coming - clear to jaywalk.

I started to step out between two parked cars, to cross the street in the middle of the block.

Just then a car horn honked, near enough to startle me, and I froze in my tracks.

And as I froze, a car zoomed past me, coming from my left, going the wrong way up the one-way street, and fast.

The car that honked, apparently, hadn't seen me, but saw the car going the wrong way and honked at him to let him know he was going the wrong way. Or somthing.

If not for that car honk, I would have stepped out between the cars, and been hit hard by the car speeding the wrong way.

Lesson: even if it's a one way street, look both ways.

I'm sure that metaphor applies to life in general, somehow.
